ACTIVITY 1: Tools for the administration and recovery of information

BASIC INFORMATION                                        HOURS: 10
  • Transversal training activity with the objective of helping doctoral students acquire the capacity to make and manage bibliographical searches about a research topic in different public and private bibliographical databases.
  • Content and chronological sequence: Doctoral students will be able to access this transversal training activity during the first quarter of each academic year.
    • Unit 1. The search for scientific information.
      • The search for scientific information.
    • Unit 2. Where to look for specialised information.
      • Sources of information (adapted to the doctoral programme).
    • Unit 3. How to quote information.
      • Citation styles.
    • Unit 4. Use and management of information.
      • Managing copyright.
      • Managing bibliographical references.
    • Unit 5. Scientific publishing (adapted to the doctoral programme).
      • Where and how to publish.
      • Magazine quality.
      • Keeping up to date with scientific information.
  • The vehicular languages will be Spanish and Valencian.
EVALUATION PROCEDURE:

Students will be evaluated through tests related to the contents of the activity. Passing this activity shows that the student has acquired the corresponding skills and competences.

CALENDAR:

This activity will only be carried out in the distance modality using the MOODLE platform. Starting date: 14 March, ending date:  March 2019.

ACTIVITY 2: Purposes and goals of research

BASIC INFORMATION                                        HOURS: 6
  • Transversal training activity with the objective of helping doctoral students understand the purpose of scientific research in any area of research. The scientific method. Classification of scientific disciplines.
  • Content and chronological sequence: Doctoral students will be able to access this transversal training activity during the second quarter of each academic year.
    • Unit 1.                                                                               2 horas
      • Concept, characteristics and subject of scientific research. The scientific method.    
    • Unit 2.                                                                               2 horas
      • How to carry out a research project.
    • Unit 3.                                                                               2 horas
      • Implementation of gender perspective in research.
  • Classes will be structured into 3 sessions and will be taught during the afternoon schedule with the purpose of facilitating attendance for both, full time and part time students.
  • The vehicular languages will be Spanish on-site modality and Spanish, Valencian and English in distance modality.
EVALUATION PROCEDURE
  • On-site modality: This activity will be assessed through the solving of practical exercises.
  • Distance modality: Answering a test through the MOODLE platform.

ACTIVITY 3: Scientific communication models

BASIC INFORMATION                                        HOURS: 10 
  • Transversal training activity with the objective of helping doctoral students acquire the necessary knowledge regarding ways of carrying out scientific communication and exposure.

    The purpose of this unit is to educate students about the need to expose research at every level, from the purely professional level to the citizens external to the university world.

    Another goal is to touch the subject of dissemination and to learn how to adapt to the audience to whom the information is directed, especially when the dissemination is done through non-written means.

    The activity presents how to carry out a scientific publishing from a more professional point of view (by scientific we are referring to any branch of knowledge) and how to carry out an effective oral presentation, dedicating a specific section to the problems of speaking in public.

    From a more technological point of view, the most common computer environments that can be used for oral presentations, as well as other resources and useful tools for the doctoral student in his task of elaborating the doctoral thesis are presented.

  • Content and chronological sequence: Doctoral students will be able to access this transversal training activity during the second quarter of each academic year.
    •  Unit 1. The analysis of oral and written speech  2 hours
      • The modes of communication. The oral and written channel.
      • The components of oral and written speech.
    • Unit 2. Communication of scientific research       2 hours
      • The writing of an article of investigation in magazines
      • Oral communication in congresses
      • The poster in congresses
    • Unit 3. Types of formats in graphic files              2 hours
      • Bitmap and vector formats. Characteristics and types of use. Examples of use with Web 2.0 tools (Google Drawings and Statpedia).
    • Unit 4. How to write a text with LateX                  2 hours
      • Composition of high quality texts. Introduction of text, vignettes, images and bibliography. Use of collaborative tools Web 2.0 (Overleaf).
    • Unit 5. Elaboration of presentations: slides and posters 2 hours
      • Creation of presentations and posters collaboratively with Web 2.0 tools (Google Presentations).
  • Classes will be taught during the afternoon schedule with the purpose of facilitating attendance for both, full time and part time students.
  • The vehicular languages will be Spanish on-site modality and Spanish, Valencian and English in distance modality.
EVALUATION PROCEDURE
  • On-site modality: Attendance 80% and active participation.
  • Distance modality: Answering a test through the MOODLE platform.

ACTIVITY 4: Knowledge transfer models

  • Transversal training activity with the objective of introducing the basic concepts for a process of knowledge transfer and when relevant, business development and Company Planning as a fundamental tool for the viability analysis of a research or creation process and its technological, social, artistic or cultural transfer. Protection of intellectual and industrial ownership rights. Strategies for the transfer of technology: article 83 of the LOU, exploitation licences and spin-offs.
  • Content and chronological sequence: Doctoral students will be able to access this transversal training activity during the second quarter of each academic year.

      • The concept of I+D+r.
      • Models for the financing of research.
      • Public financing: subsidies.
      • Private financing: Company-university relationship, sponsorship. Capital/risk; Business Angels.
    • Unit 2.                                                                                                      2 hours
      • Transfer model and university legislation
    • Unit 3.                                                                                                      2 hours
      • Protection of research results. The rights of intellectual and industrial property.
    • Unit 4.                                                                                                      2 hours
      • Companies with a technological base

      • Scientific and technological parks.                          
    • Unit 6.                                                                                                      4 hours
      • Tax incentives towards research and entrepreneurism.
  • Classes will be taught during the afternoon schedule with the purpose of facilitating attendance for both, full time and part time students.
  • The vehicular languages will be Spanish on-site modality and Spanish, Valencian and English in distance modality.
EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
  • On-site modality: Doctoral students will answer a test that will be done in a classroom as a final assessable activity.
  • Online modality: Answering a test through the MOODLE platform.
