PhD thesis with international joint supervision

WHAT IS MEANT BY INTERNATIONAL JOINT SUPERVISION?

International joint supervision allows PhD candidates to prepare and defend their theses in collaboration with other non-Spanish universities in order to get their doctoral degree certificate from both universities.

IS AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE UA AND ANOTHER NON-SPANISH UNIVERSITY NECESSARY?

This type of PhD thesis requires a specific international supervision agreement between the UA and a non-Spanish university.

WHERE CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE CURRENT AGREEMENTS ON INTERNATIONAL SUPERVISION HELD BY THE UA?

Check this link for full information.

IF THERE IS NO AGREEMENT, HOW CAN I REQUEST AN AGREEMENT TO BE SIGNED?

If there is no agreement with the partner university (see current agreements), the teaching and research staff of the University of Alicante interested in making a proposal for an agreement will draw up a proposal for an agreement. For such a purpose, there is a model agreement which, after having agreed the terms and conditions with the partner university, will be sent completed to the Agreements Office following this protocol..

REQUIREMENTS FOR A THESIS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR INTERNATIONAL JOINT SUPERVISION.

  • Agreement signed by the UA and another non-Spanish university.
  • The PhD candidate must be enrolled in both universities.
  • If the agreement is for more than one PhD student, the interested party must contact the PhD coordinator and fill out the annex to the joint supervision agreement, which can be found at the end of the model agreement. Once the document has been signed by all parties, it must be submitted to the Doctoral School.
  • If the agreement is for only one PhD student, the document mentioned above will not be attached.
  • A research visit of at least six months in each university must be carried out.
  • A PhD supervisor from each university is required.
  • PhD students must fulfil all academic obligations at each university.

PhD FEES AND HOW TO PAY

The annual fees and where to pay them by the PhD candidate will be established on the agreement or annex to the agreement. In any case, the administration fee for the opening of the student record, the university card fee and the insurance fee will be paid to the UA.

In the case of having to pay those fees at the other university, PhD candidates should contact the Doctoral School for a fee waiver at the UA using this form

PhD EXAMINATION

Both at which university the PhD oral examination will be held and the appointment of the members of the PhD examination panel will be stated in the agreement or annex to the agreement.

When a PhD degree is taught jointly with other universities (inter-university degrees), the joint supervision agreements that may be signed only affect the student of the University of Alicante with no effect on the rest of the students of the other universities.
