INDUSTRIAL PhD ENDORSEMENT

What does the Industrial PhD endorsement involve?

A PhD degree certificate is provided with this endorsement when the PhD candidate participates in an industrial research or experimental development project, directly related to their PhD thesis, developed in a company or public administration, but never in a university.

The project can be developed entirely in the company or in collaboration between the company and the university.

The PhD student will have a thesis tutor appointed by the University and a supervisor appointed by the company or public administration, who may be, if appropriate, the Director of the thesis in accordance with the PhD regulations.

What is the goal?

The goal is training researchers in companies linked to any of the fields of knowledge, or in public administrations, through the completion of their PhD thesis in experimental development or industrial research projects.

How can be the industrial PhD endorsement accredited?

In accordance with the Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28th, which regulates official PhD programmes, the PhD certificate may include this "Industrial PhD endorsement" on its obverse, provided that the following circumstances concur

a) The existence of an employment or commercial contract with the PhD student. The contract may be entered into by a company in the private or public sector, as well as by a Public Administration.

b) The PhD student must participate in an industrial research or experimental development project that is developed in the company or public administration in which the service is provided, provided that it is not a university. The industrial research or experimental development project in which the PhD student participates must be directly related to their thesis. This direct relationship will be accredited by means of a report that will have to be endorsed by the University involved.

What are the requirements of the PhD student's contract with the company or public administration?

According to the consultation made to the Ministry, the contracts must meet the following criteria:

  • Type of contract: full-time contract.
  • Start date and duration of the contract: at the time of submitting the report endorsed by the Academic Commission to the Doctoral School, the PhD candidate must already be hired or contracted. The contract should not end before the date of the PhD thesis oral exam.

Is an agreement between the University and the company or public administration required?

The signing of an agreement will only be necessary when the industrial research or experimental development project is carried out in collaboration between the University and the company or public administration where the PhD student is working.

In these cases, a framework collaboration agreement between the parties will be signed, where the obligations of the University and the obligations of the company or public administration must be indicated, as well as the procedure for selecting PhD candidates.
